Model United Nations
Model UN strives to advance the understanding of international affairs by following the procedures of the United Nations and other international organizations, such as NATO and the EU. Each year, students attend Model UN Conferences, which are comprised of committees with an agenda, where students represent countries and simulate the proceedings of their committee. Students who attend conferences are expected to conduct library research on an assigned nation and specific topics, complete all written work required as part of the preparation for the conference, and follow rules of dress and conduct while attending the conference.
The International American School of Cancun was the first school in Cancun to have a Model United Nations Simulation. It is the only school in Cancun which offers Model UN as part of its curriculum. All students take the class in tenth grade. The Secretariat Class is an elective, offered to students in grades 10-12. The purpose of this class is to plan CancunMUN.
The three major conferences in which IAS participates are the following:
- CancunMUN (November) - All 10th grade students must participate as part of their Model UN class. In May of 2005 IAS held its first Model UN simulation.
- IMMUNS American School Foundation of Monterrey (February) - IAS has participated in this conference every year since 2003.
- International Conference (time and place vary each year) - IAS students have attended conferences at Princeton and Stanford Universities in the United States and at the UNESCO in Paris, France.
Some IAS students have also participated in local conferences held at other schools in Cancun.
Students attending conferences outside Cancun must have a minimum grade average of 8.0 as well as an excellent conduct record. Students who want to participate in the international conference must have taken part in the Cancun or Monterrey conference.
