Student Groups

Taking part in athletics, student organizations, and the arts both as a participant and spectator, is an important part of a student´s total educational experience. Such participation is a privilege that carries responsibility to the student, school, parents, and the community.

To be eligible for membership in the National Honor Society, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 8.8. At the end of each school year, students who have the required grade point average are evaluated by all members of the faculty. A Faculty Committee of five teachers appointed by the principal then selects those students who meet the high standards of leadership, service, and character. These students are invited to write essays describing their reasons for joining the organization and how they expect to contribute to it. The induction of ceremony is held annually the first week of September. In addition to helping with school activities such as Mexican Independence Day, the recycling program, and Family Day, the society also holds an annual walkathon in April to raise funds for a local charity.

The IAS Student Council is another important student organization. The officers and student representatives are elected by their classmates the first week of September.  They participate in the organization of activities such as IAS Idol, March Madness, and Family Day.

Through membership in the National Honor Society and the Student Council, IAS students are given the opportunity to undertake leadership roles within the school community and to enhance the quality of student life by acting as a ‘voice’ in administrative decisions and planning.  In early September members of both groups participate in a leadership workshop, which aims to make the students stronger leaders and gives them an opportunity to plan for the school year.
